GPs-can has been born out of a desire to provide positive messages about the role of general practice and general practitioners (GPs).
How the work we do positively impacts the lives of our patients, our communities and the health of the nation.
In a world full of negativity and “alternative facts”, I want to showcase the everyday work being done by members of my profession.
I want to counter negativity with a move towards positive culture.

Please note, in saying that GPs can, I am not saying only GPs can, nor that all GPs can, or even that GPs will.

I acknowledge that GPs exist within an ecosystem and are co-dependent upon the other members of the team. So, before I go any further, let me give a shout out of thanks, honour and respect to reception staff, fellow GPs, practice nurses, practice managers, IT support, cleaners, suppliers and the wide range of health professionals, government, not-for-profit and consumer websites, peer support organisations and community members who I refer to.

I cannot do the work that I do if others do not do the work that they do.

Utilising the ability of a web-based service to spread a message far and wide, I hope GPs-can will showcase the breadth and depth of knowledge and skills GPs have and the awesome work being done in general practice. In doing so, I hope to correct, inform, inspire and provide.
If you find yourself thinking “Hmm, my GP can’t do this stuff” then can I encourage you to ask your GP. They may surprise you by being able to help or they may direct or refer you to a colleague who has the additional knowledge or skill that you require.

Is this aspirational? Yes. Ambitious? Absolutely! Achievable? How on earth would you measure? But if you have read this far, then perhaps.
I wish to challenge perceptions, start conversations, raise the bar and change always starts with one.
From here, I need a domino effect, but the next step is yours.
I am being the change I wish to see, what about you?

#GPs can

The words on this page come from ourselves, members of the general practice team and our health professional colleagues.

#Practice nurses can
The words on this page come from consumers, practice nurses, GPs and other members of the general practice team.

#Reception
The words on this page come from receptionists, GPs, consumers and members of the expanded primary healthcare team.

#The stories
This page started as a way to tell the stories behind some of the photographs, but as the 2020 Australian bushfire emergency came upon us, it was also the way to tell some of the stories from the front line. Other stories have flowed and who knows where this will take us.

I am encouraged, informed and inspired by my general practice team and colleagues across the length and breadth of Australia and beyond. My voice is not singular—it is supported by many who have generously contributed to this project.

I am simply the public face.
